In Friday (22 April) morning’s first session of 1/8 finals, four teams secured themselves spots in tonight’s (1930, Central European Summer Time) quarter-final match-ups.

In a dramatic last-stone finish, Estonia won 8-7 against a previously undefeated Norway. Norway were heavy on their final draw in the eighth end, which gave Estonia the winning point and guaranteed their first ever Olympic points. Norway stole three points in the sixth end and Estonia responded back with three points in the seventh to tie the game going into the last end.

Canada continued their perfect run of wins after a 12-2 victory over New Zealand placing themselves in the quarter-finals and improving their win/loss record to 7-0. Canada scored four points in the first end and two points in the third end, which gave them a commanding lead.

USA took control of their game against Austria after the sixth end when Austria was light on a draw, giving USA a steal of one point and a four-point lead, 6-2. USA scored one point in the seventh end, and ran the Austrians out of stones in the final end, earning themselves a spot in the quarter-finals. The game ended 7-2.

Russia also secured themselves a quarter-final berth with a victory over Slovakia. Russia opened with three points in the first end and another three points in the sixth end to finish the game 10-2.

They Said It

Marliese Kasner; Canada (after 12-2 win over New Zealand): "We just wanted to come out playing our best game, making those draw shots and making the runbacks when we needed. That's what we did. We didn't look at whom we are playing, we were just making those shots, and things worked out correct. So it was good!"

Marie Turmann; Estonia (after 8-7 win over Norway): "I made a perfect shot in the seventh [end] to get three. When I saw Harri's [Lill] one stone in the eighth that was to keep their stone away, I was like, oooh, I’ve gotta make a tough shot in the end, and when I made it, I was like, they have to miss, they have to miss, and that was their first missing end.

“[Now], We have to win and focus, because that was a hard game, and we have had only hard games and some easier ones, so we have to focus and just try to get a medal. Actually these are the first Olympic points for Estonia in curling, ever!"

Joe Polo; USA (after 7-2 win over Austria): “That’s why we’re here, we’re here for the Olympic points and to get the US into the games. You have to beat everybody to win these things, so we’re looking forward to the next game and hopefully we’ll go out there and play well... just three more [games] to go.”

Anastasia Bryzgalova; Russia (after 10-2 win over Slovakia): “It was good ice today and we made all our shots, so it was good. We’re getting more confident.”
