At the conclusion of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2017 round-robin on Thursday (27 April) the top three teams in each of the five groups were guaranteed a place in the last 16 games.
The 16th team to qualify was then decided by looking at the draw shot challenge results of all the teams that finished in fourth place, across the groups. Ireland earned this 16th position with a draw shot challenge (DSC) result of 20.13cm, which was better than Japan, Australia, England and Slovenia.
A similar system was then used to establish the one to 15 ranking. In order to get one to five the draw shot challenge of each of the teams that finished first across the groups was considered and so on, for the second and third placed teams.
This meant the ranking from one to 16 was: Korea, USA, Switzerland, Scotland, Latvia, Norway, Czech Republic, Russia, China, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Spain, Finland and Ireland.
Once this was known the teams were matched up as follows – one plays 16, two plays 15, three plays 14, four plays 13 and so on.
Therefore, the last 16 match-ups are:
09.00 on Friday (28 April): Korea v Ireland; Russia v China; Latvia v Sweden; Scotland v Canada
12.30 on Friday (both -6 UTC): Switzerland v Spain; Norway v Italy; Czech Republic v Hungary; and USA v Finland.
From the last 16 games onwards, it’s a straight knock-out. So, the winners of the last 16 games move to the quarter-finals. The winners of the quarter-finals move to the semi-finals and the winners of the semi-finals compete for gold and silver medals in the final. The losers of the semi-finals compete for the bronze medals.
The results of these two medal games will then establish the teams ranked one to four at the end of the championship. However, with Olympic Qualification Points available at this event, for the top 12 teams, additional play-off games are required – see graphic below.
